PEX Pipes and Copper Pipes Advantages:

PEX Pipes:

– The flexible material of the PEX pipe allows plumbers to install the pipes easily with fewer connections.

– The plastic material of the pipe is resistant to breaks in chilly weather and has fewer joints, bringing your costs down.

– PEX pipes can have a pressure balanced system.

Copper Pipes:

– The material of copper pipes is a more stable material to have in place in the event of a natural disaster.

– Copper material is recyclable making it a more environmentally friendly choice.

– The pipes are weather and bacteria resistant.

PEX Pipes and Copper Pipes Disadvantages:

– These pipes cannot be used outside except for underground plumbing. Outside weather conditions will crack and wear the material very quickly.

– The material cannot be recycled.

– The pipes are vulnerable to rodents. Rodents have been known to be able to chew through the material.

– Copper is a more expensive material than PEX pies.

– The pipes may require extra treatment (flushing and washing to remove harmful residues in the pipes)

– The pipes are vulnerable to possible pinhole leaks, corrosion, and leaching of copper.

  1. I am glad that you mentioned on your list that copper piping is weather and bacteria resistant. I have been considering replacing the piping in my home for quite some time, as I have regularly dealt with bacteria issues with my pipes. I think that I will look into copper piping as an alternative to the current pipework I have right now.
